As a D.C. comic book character, Black Adam has been around for a very long time, with his first appearance dating back to 1945. He’s enjoyed extensive development over the decades, turning him into a complex character with limited allegiances and patience. He’s now ready for the big screen in “Black Adam,” with Dwayne Johnson taking the part of an all-powerful “Champion” who’s been imprisoned for centuries, finally unleashed in 2022, where he receives a strange education on the ways of heroism and authority. The role plays to Johnson’s strengths, giving him a tight costume to wear and limited dialogue to share, but director Jaume Collet-Serra (“Jungle Cruise,” “The Shallows”) feels the need to generate a superhero film as big as his star. “Black Adam” is drenched in CGI-laden battles and loaded with character connections and backstory, creating a tiresome, repetitive picture, and one that really doesn’t do much with Black Adam, who spends most of the endeavor blandly scowling and swatting opponents, making for a deflated viewing experience.
In the middle eastern country of Kahndaq, the crime syndicate Intergang has claimed the land, putting the locals under control. Young Amon (Bodhi Sabongui) pushes back against the invaders, while his mother, Adrianna (Sarah Shahi), is an archaeologist in search of the Crown of Sabbac, a magical device capable of bringing the wearer tremendous power. While discovering the Crown, Adrianna also uncovers an ancient tomb, and when threatened with Intergang violence, she manages to free Teth-Adam (Dwayne Johnson) from bondage, soon left with a powerful being newly exposed to a different world. Returning to Kahndaq, Amon tries to encourage Teth-Adam to become a hero for the people, with the mystery man’s awesome strength and Shazam magic easily defeating aggressors. Investigating this strange arrival is the Justice Society, with Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo) tasked with deciding just how dangerous Teth-Adam truly is.
A mighty exposition dump is presented right at the top of “Black Adam.” The story begins 5,000 years ago, with the initial discovery of the Crown and its dangerous magic, explored through the saga of a father and son fighting to disrupt a transfer of power. The story jumps ahead to Amon’s experience in Kahndaq, with the skateboarding kid trying to work around Intergang control, but the adults in the city aren’t as slippery, feeling the pressure of weaponized rule. And there’s more with the Crown and Adrianna’s quest to locate it, coming across Teth-Adam in the process, who shares his own origin story later in the movie. There’s a lot to understand in “Black Adam,” which might be a huge ask for those unfamiliar with this comic book world, and the screenplay doesn’t always clarify matters in a thrilling way, preferring to slop on dialogue to power through motivations.
